Tobacco Barns

Hardwick Barn

Conway, SC
Built in the late 1950s at Hardwick Farm, the barn was built out of necessity when the only existing barn on the farm burned. The owner, Don Hardwick, was no longer farming but had a tobacco acreage allowance. As was common, he rented the acreage to his neighbor, Varnie Brown. Varnie had three young sons, so they provided the labor and Don provided the timber to build the needed barn to cure the tobacco. One of the sons, Emory Lee, assisted Don in selecting the trees from the woods behind the Hardwick home. The trees were then cut down and prepared for building with the help of the other two brothers, Jim and Everette. They assisted in skinning the bark and pulling the cut trees by mule to the barn site. Another neighbor, Olin Martin, framed the barn, and the Brown sons then completed it. Jim Brown remembers that the 20x20 barn would require a full day of work to fill with tobacco. His most vivid memory was "hard work."
